Discover nature in the city! Join Philadelphia Outward Bound staff for free ziplining and Audubon Mid-Atlantic staff for the a morning bird walk, the City Nature Challenge, and a survey of the freshwater mussels growing in the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir.
Bird Walk with Philly Queer Birders- 8am-10am
Birders of all experience levels are welcome on this guided bird walk around the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir and the grounds of The Discovery Center. Borrow our binoculars or bring your own!
City Nature Challenge - Guided at The Discovery Center: 10am-1pm, Self guided around Philadelphia: April 29th through May 2nd
The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe. It’s a bioblitz-style competition where cities are in a contest against each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people. www.citynaturechallenge.org
Join us at The Discovery Center to ensure Philadelphia wins the challenge! Audubon staff will lead walks along our trail at 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm. We’ll use the app iNaturalist to catalogue and find the species that inhabit The Discovery Center. Guests are encouraged to bring their tablets and phones and join our staff in finding as many species as we can. No experience necessary as iNaturalist takes photos and identification is done by crowd sourcing from all over the world.
Mussel Survey 10am-12pm
Volunteers will be led by Bria Wimberly, one of Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s Environmental Educators in measuring and recording the size of the mussels growing in the water. All materials and gloves will be provided, but come prepared to potentially get a little wet.
This is a family-friendly activity, but those under 12 need a responsible adult with them. Advanced registration is recommended as there is a limited number of spaces available. Please register here.
Ziplining- 10am-4pm
Please note:
The zipline is for ages 12 and above. A parent or guardian must be present to sign the liability waiver for participants under the age of 18. No experience is needed and all safety equipment is provided.
Closed toed shoes are REQUIRED. Participants must be willing to climb about 40 feet on a cargo net to the zipline platform.
